Traditional offset printing requires large print runs to justify the cost of setting up printing plates, which is why most box manufacturers set candle boxes no minimum in the thousands of units. We produce candle boxes on digital presses, which print directly from a file with no plates and no setup charge, so a run of 50 boxes costs proportionally the same to set up as a run of 5,000.
In practice, this means you can order exactly what you need: a small batch to test a new scent or design, a restock between larger production runs, or a single sample box to check fit and print quality before committing to a bigger order. Per-unit pricing does drop as quantity increases, since material and shipping costs spread across more boxes, but there is no order size below which we will not print.
Different candle formats need different box structures. Here is what we build most often, and what each is actually suited for.
A separate lid lifts fully off the base, which gives the most premium, gift-ready unboxing experience of any candle box style. Well suited to jar candles being sold as gifts, since the lid protects the glass without needing tape or a tuck flap that could scratch the finish.
A single-piece carton that folds and locks shut, the most common and cost-efficient style for retail candle packaging. Works well for jar and votive candles sold at scale, where speed of assembly and lower per-unit cost matter more than a lift-off lid.
A tuck-end or two-piece box with a die-cut window, typically over the candle’s label or wax color, so the customer can see the product before buying. Especially effective for jar candles, where wax color and fill level are part of the buying decision.
A slim outer sleeve slides over the candle jar or a rigid inner tray, giving a minimalist, modern presentation with less material than a full box. A strong fit for jar candles sold direct-to-consumer, where the sleeve itself carries the branding and the jar is visible top and bottom.
Built for retail shelf presentation, often with an open face or a cut-away front panel, so multiple candles can be merchandised together at a point of sale. Common for boutique and specialty retail placements.
A simple, minimal box or sleeve used primarily to keep dust and handling residue off an already-labeled candle jar during storage or shipping, rather than to carry the main branding. A lower-cost option when the jar or label is doing most of the visual work.
Heavier-duty corrugated construction built specifically for e-commerce shipping, where the box needs to survive transit rather than sit on a shelf. We recommend this style, often paired with an insert, for any candle shipping direct to a customer’s door.
| Candle Type | Recommended Style | Key Consideration |
| Jar candles (glass) | Two-piece, window, or sleeve | Glass is heavy and breakable; prioritize a snug-fit insert for shipping |
| Pillar candles | Tuck-end or two-piece | Freestanding wax can soften in heat; ventilated stock helps in warm climates |
| Taper candles | Slim tuck-end or sleeve | Long, narrow footprint; watch for bending during handling |
| Votives and tealights | Multi-unit tuck-end with inserts | Usually sold in sets; inserts prevent units from rattling and chipping wax |
| Wax melts | Small tuck-end or clamshell-style carton | Individual cubes need compartments to prevent them fusing together in heat |
| Material | Typical Weight | Best For |
| SBS paperboard (cardstock) | 14pt to 24pt | Retail candle boxes needing a clean, premium print surface |
| Kraft board | Natural brown, uncoated | Eco-positioned and artisanal candle brands |
| Rigid board (setup boxes) | 36pt to 120pt condensed board | Luxury gift candles and higher-end retail lines |
| Corrugated | E-flute or B-flute | Shipping cartons and multi-candle sets that need transit protection |
As a general guide: 14pt cardstock is light enough to stand on a shelf but not much more, 18pt is closer to the thickness of a postcard and holds up to normal retail handling, and 24pt is the sturdiest paperboard option, often specified for candles that ship inside a separate shipping box rather than sitting directly on a shelf.
Jar candles are heavy, fragile, and unforgiving in shipping if the box does not fit properly. A box with too much empty space lets the jar shift and impact the walls; a box that is too tight stresses the seams during assembly. We build inserts, dividers, and snug-fit dielines specifically around your jar’s dimensions rather than offering a generic size and hoping it fits.
Candle packaging sells a mood as much as a product, so finish selection matters. We print in full-color CMYK or matched Pantone spot colors, with the following finishing options:
This is the part of candle box packaging most printing companies never mention, and it matters more than any finish option. In the United States, candle safety labeling is governed primarily by ASTM F2058, a voluntary but widely adopted standard for candle fire safety labeling, alongside ASTM F2417 for candle fire safety performance and CPSC oversight under the Consumer Product Safety Act.
Under ASTM F2058, a compliant candle label needs specific warning language, including a statement to burn the candle within sight, and either text or an approved pictogram covering keeping the candle away from flammable materials and away from children. ASTM F2601, which covers candle accessories, additionally requires the word “Warning” printed in bold at the top of the label.
We design your box layout with dedicated, correctly sized space for this required warning copy from the start, rather than fitting it in as an afterthought once the rest of the artwork is finalized. If you are unsure whether your current label copy meets ASTM F2058 language requirements, our design team will flag it during the proofing stage, though final compliance responsibility for candle safety claims rests with the brand selling the product.
For votives, tealights, and sampler sets, we build boxes with internal inserts sized for multiple units, commonly in sets of 1, 2, 4, 6, or 12 candles depending on box size. Gift sets typically pair a two-piece or rigid box style with a fitted insert, since the insert is what keeps individual candles from shifting and chipping against each other during shipping and handling.
Candle boxes made from SBS paperboard, kraft, and corrugated material are widely recyclable through standard curbside programs. We offer FSC-certified stock on request for brands that want to state a verified sourcing claim on packaging, and recommend against laminated foil or plastic-coated finishes if curbside recyclability is a priority for your brand, since heavy lamination can interfere with paper recycling processes.
