When grease is the enemy, greaseproof paper is the answer. It stops oil and fat from soaking through not with a layer of plastic or wax, but by densely compressing the paper fibers themselves. Our custom greaseproof paper pairs that clean, high-performance barrier with your branding, printed edge-to-edge and supplied as sheets or rolls. Often compared to custom wax paper and custom printed parchment paper, greaseproof sits between them: more grease resistance than parchment, more recyclable than wax. Every greaseproof paper custom run uses food-grade inks, free Pantone® matching, and fast U.S. turnaround on custom printed paper.

Product Description

What Is Greaseproof Paper?

Greaseproof paper is a food-grade paper that resists oil and grease through its physical structure rather than a coating. During manufacturing the pulp is heavily beaten and densely calendered, packing the fibers so tightly that fat cannot pass through. The result is a smooth, grease-resistant sheet that needs no wax or silicone which keeps it recyclable and compostable in a way coated papers often are not.

This puts greaseproof in a useful middle ground. Custom wax paper resists grease via a wax coating but is not recyclable in most programs and not oven-safe. Custom printed parchment paper is silicone-treated and oven-safe but more expensive and aimed at baking. Greaseproof paper custom-printed gives you very high grease resistance for wrapping, lining, and interleaving fatty foods cleaner at end-of-life than wax, more affordable than parchment, and printable with your brand. It is the practical choice for fried foods, butter, deli items, and basket lining where oven use is not required.

Industry Applications

Fried Foods, Burgers & Fast-Casual

Greaseproof paper is built for the oiliest items on the menu fries, fried chicken, fritters, and burgers. It contains grease so the package does not soak through, lines baskets and trays cleanly, and brands the presentation. Custom made printed papers under and around fried food turns every basket into an on-brand, photo-ready moment while keeping the grease where it belongs.

Bakeries, Pâtisseries & Butter Brands

Bakeries use greaseproof for buttery pastries, laminated doughs, and lining, where it resists grease and releases cleanly. Butter and dairy brands wrap blocks in greaseproof to prevent oil bleed-through. For oven use specifically, custom printed parchment paper is the silicone-treated alternative; for wrapping and lining, greaseproof is the cleaner, more economical choice.

Delis, Cheese & Charcuterie

Delis and cheese counters use greaseproof to wrap and interleave fatty items cured meats, cheeses, and prepared foods with a smooth, professional, grease-resistant finish. Branded greaseproof paper custom-printed with the shop logo elevates the counter and travels cleanly for takeaway.

Food Trucks, Events & Concessions

High-volume, high-grease service is exactly where greaseproof shines. Pre-cut sheets and basket liners wrap and present messy items fast while branding the package at scale, and the grease resistance keeps the print crisp even under hot, oily food through a long event or service line.

Greaseproof vs. Wax, Parchment & Related Papers

Greaseproof, wax, and parchment are often confused. Here is how they actually differ so you can choose the right one:

Paper Type How It Resists Grease Oven-Safe Best For Eco Profile
Greaseproof Paper Densely calendered fiber No Fried foods, butter, deli, liners Recyclable; compostable
Wax Paper Wax coating both sides No Candy, pastry, fatty foods Compostable if natural wax
Parchment Paper Silicone treatment Yes Baking, oven liners, roasting Compostable (uncoated grades)
Glassine Supercalendering No Chocolates, prints, interleaving Recyclable & compostable
Kraft Uncoated (low resistance) No Dry goods, outer wrap Widely recyclable

The short version: choose greaseproof for high grease resistance with cleaner recyclability and no oven need; choose wax paper for candy and very fatty cold items; choose parchment when you need oven-safe. We print custom branding on all of them.

Formats & Sizes

We supply custom greaseproof as pre-cut sheets, interleaving sheets, or rolls, in standard and fully custom dimensions:

Format Common Sizes Best For Notes
Pre-Cut Sheets 12″×12″, 15″×15″ Wrapping, basket liners Fast service; low waste
Deli / Patty Sheets Custom dimensions Interleaving, stacking Easy single-sheet pull
Rolls 12″–18″ wide High volume, varied cuts Cut to any size in-house

Quality, Food Safety & Sustainability

All our greaseproof papers are printed with food-grade, low-migration inks suitable for direct food contact, and our base stocks meet FDA requirements for food packaging. Because greaseproof relies on dense calendering rather than a coating, uncoated grades are recyclable and compostable one of its key advantages over wax paper. We will help you balance grease performance against eco goals and stay honest about recycling and composting in your area. FSC® chain-of-custody is available for qualifying paper runs on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

They resist grease in different ways. Greaseproof paper is densely calendered so the fibers themselves block oil no coating, which keeps it recyclable and compostable, but it is not oven-safe. Wax paper has a wax coating on both sides for high grease resistance; it is not oven-safe and usually not recyclable. Parchment paper is silicone-treated, which makes it oven-safe and non-stick for baking. For wrapping and lining fatty foods, greaseproof is the cleaner choice; for baking in the oven, use parchment; for candy and very fatty cold items, wax paper works well.
Yes, and that is one of its biggest advantages. Because greaseproof gets its grease resistance from dense calendering rather than a wax or plastic coating, uncoated grades are widely recyclable and compostable when clean. This makes it a more sustainable choice than custom wax paper for many wrapping and lining applications. If end-of-life recyclability matters to your brand, greaseproof is usually the better pick, and we can advise on the cleanest configuration.
No, greaseproof paper is not designed for oven use. For baking, roasting, or any high-heat oven application, you need custom printed parchment paper, which is silicone-treated to be heat-stable and non-stick. Greaseproof is built for wrapping, lining, and interleaving grease-heavy foods at room or serving temperature. If you need an oven-safe option, ask us about custom parchment instead, and we can supply both if your operation needs each.
Yes. We print greaseproof paper custom designs with food-grade, low-migration inks formulated for direct food contact, and our base papers meet FDA food-packaging requirements. The inks are chosen to stay stable against grease and moisture so your branding remains crisp through wrapping, holding, and handling without transferring to the food. Free Pantone® matching is included so your brand colors reproduce accurately.
We produce custom greaseproof from low minimums to keep branded paper accessible for small shops, trucks, and growing operations share your target volume and we will confirm the minimum for your format. Standard lead time is 10–14 business days after proof approval, with rush available on request. Volume runs print flexographically for the best per-unit cost; short runs use digital printing. Free Pantone® matching is included. Email info@packprinters.com or Peter@packprinters.com with your spec and artwork for a quote.
